For the final stage of the “Reizend Symposium” the Hamburg based open collective LU’UM collaborated with CLUB SOLO and moderator Phillipine Hoegen on the spatial concept of the assembly. Six people came together on a hot sweaty summer weekend to construct and hold space for a traveling symposium. They started by assembling the left-over elements from previous exhibitions into a material library. From there, in dialogue with the gathering formats of the previous stages of the symposium, the spatial and conceptual forms took shape. In an experimental iterative process ideas were developed to be enacted and prototyped into the gallery space.
In order to establish a sense of belonging and care, the collective prepared an entry ritual for each participant. At the door, everyone had to choose a role they would like to assume for the duration of the symposium (Dreamer, Doer, Activator, Mediator). Additionally an accompanying adjective described this role more individually (f.e. sleepy Dreamer). These stickers were stuck on folding chairs to be befriended by the visitors and placed into the spatial setting.
The participants came together within a deconstructed oval circle, in between large hanging elements. The objects provided semi-transparent, comfortable corners and encouraged the visitors to gather within an intimate distance for the first stage of a non-hierarchical encounter among equal beings. In the second stage the complementary players were gathering around questions to create an assemblage of knowledge. Some of the room dividers turned into tabletops that were collectively taken down and carried to the designated areas as a symbolic gesture of collaboration. The tables, filled with notes from the session, were later hung again and became a living archive of the collected knowledge in the room, to be built upon in the last stage of the encounter.
Through thinking about new forms of a symposium instead of institutionalized ways of exchanging knowledge we can perform the possible instead of enacting the known. This allows us to position ourselves and to take responsibility within the gathering of thoughts. The curvy, fluid, soft and comforting forms of the spatial concept are an analogy of how these new forms of actively performed collective assemblies are in a continuous state of an expanding and contracting flux that is intimate, caring and supportive. Thus we always remain in an anticipatory state of the forms still to come.
