Under the title "Wie wir gestalten wollen", the context of a collaborative approach to urban planning projects aiming at the common good was explored. Moreover the corresponding role of planners, who act as agents of society, was vividly discussed. Four courageous projects from Hamburg, Berlin and Wuppertal were presented in this context and entered into an exchange with each other.
Innovations in architecture do not only arise through the built object, but also through the design of processes. In recent years, the call for more participation in urban development processes has been growing steadily. Even in administrations, the realization is emerging that early involvement of civil society can lead to better planned urban spaces and buildings. This is especially true for community-oriented planning projects. To develop spaces for communities, planners involve future users from the beginning and consider the neighborhood level.
In the first event, with the invited projects, Rathausblock (Berlin) and Neues Altona (Hamburg), it became clear how strongly civil participation can influence project development. Here, planners act as (co-)initiators of urban development projects for the common good.
The second event with the BOB Campus (Wuppertal) and the Gröninger Hof Genossenschaft (Hamburg) was dedicated to the topic of how architects or planners, as well as the future users, can work together in the design process.
