The vacant building of the former Karstadt-Sports store at the entrance to Mönckebergstraße has been revitalized in 2022 through cultural and creative interim use. LU'UM as part of the initiative Zentrum für Zukunft has teamed up with the foundation MUT - Urban Trust to contribute to a central place for cooperative and community-oriented inner city development for Hamburg - a space for knowledge production, experimentation and encounters. The vision was a transdisciplinary laboratory, in addition to an office community space for initiatives and activists from Hamburg (Open Office) and an autonomous event space for urban discourse (Platform), as well as the KOL[LABOR] - as a self-managed work space for thinking, researching and experimenting.
Towards the end of the first period of the interim usage, initiated by Zentrum für Zukunft, a house concept was developed by the house community of the former Karstadt-Sports building in a cooperative process. The community has been able to gain important experience with the various uses in the building. Fruitful cooperations as well as use-oriented conflicts between the different parties in the house have emerged and can be learned from.
A wide range of offers from fields such as art, urban development, social issues, crafts and music events brought together different people from various social backgrounds. Beyond the assignment of the Frei_Flächen program to enable creative interim use of vacant space and forster the strengthening of Hamburg's economic competitiveness as a location for the creative industries, an awareness is thus growing for approaches for the major social challenges of the social and climate-conscious transformation of Hamburg's inner city. Related to the building's location in the center of Hamburg, there is a certain responsibility to address urgent topics around social inequality in this city. The aim of the house concept is to develop a spatial concept through which the various uses are brought into balance with each other based on the collective knowledge of its users.
With more than 8000 m², the former Karstadt-Sport building accounts for about 40% of the area of the Frei_Flächen program. Therefore, it is not possible to proceed in the next period of interim usage in the same way as with other spaces provided through the program. An additional level of a community based organization is required in the building in order to be able to react more agilely to the demands and challenges of an interim usage on this scale.
