Wenn man einen Raum schafft, der nicht auf Konsum zielt, sondern auf Begegnung? Das mobile Redaktionsteam von LU’UM sammelt Stimmen, Geschichten, Gedanken und Bilder aus dem Alltag der Innenstadt. Entlang von Spaziergängen, Interviews, Workshops und spontanen Gesprächen entsteht eine vielstimmige Zeitung.Themen der Ausgaben:

Er parkt dort, wo Nachbarschaft möglich wird: zwischen Passant*innen und Gewerbe, an Orten des Wandels, im Schatten von Denkmälern oder mitten im Alltag. Es entstehen Formate wie Stadtspaziergänge, Rollenspiele, Austauschaktionen oder kulinarische Recherchen und gemeinsames Essen – konsumfrei, offen und einladend.Nachbarschaft – als Realität und Imagination:Gerade in der Hamburger Innenstadt, wo wenige Menschen wohnen, wirft das Projekt die Frage auf: Was macht eine Nachbarschaft aus? Und wo ist sie längst da, ohne dass wir sie als solche sehen? STAND DER DINGE macht soziale Gefüge sichtbar, regt zur kritischen Auseinandersetzung an und ermutigt dazu, die Innenstadt als gemeinsam gestaltbaren Raum zu begreifen.Teil des Programms „Verborgene Potenziale“:
Das Projekt ist eines von mehreren Pilotvorhaben im Rahmen des Hamburger Programms „Verborgene Potenziale – Gemeinschaftliche Entwicklung der Nutzungsvielfalt für eine lebendige und resiliente Hamburger Innenstadt“.Gefördert wird es durch die Behörde für Stadtentwicklung und Wohnen mit Mitteln aus dem Bundesprogramm „Zukunftsfähige Innenstädte und Zentren“ des Bundesministeriums für Wohnen, Stadtentwicklung und Bauwesen. In Spring 2023, after a phase of reorientation, we got back into a regular rhythm of getting in exchange with a bigger community with the format EINMAL IM MONAT on every 1st Wednesday of the month. Each motto for the retrospective gathering is reflecting on our current situation as a collective. The meetings however are meant to be a convivial ground for exchange rather than a one directional presentation of our practice.

Open gatherings have always been a part of LU'UM. With the format EINMAL IM MONAT we move from one location to another. In 2023 we gathered in our temporary spaces in the fux Genossenschaft and Neues Amt. We visited the project “Closing Circles” by Wefield in the Gleishalle Oberhafen. We celebrated a block party in the backyard of a collective member Déborah. We were booth operators handing out french fries at the kiosk of hallo hallo hallo at PARKS and we organized a BBQ at the Honigfabrik in Wilhemsburg. Closing the year in December we built Lebkuchenhäuser at Neues Amt. The first gatherings of 2024 were held at our new collective space in Münzviertel accompanied by an experimental podcast format called “Inside the Box” in cooperation with not a blind spot.
We see the meeting itself as a contribution to a greater support-structure beyond disciplines and backgrounds. Attending the open gatherings has been the starting point for almost all of us to join LU‘UM as active members. We always inform the public on instagram a few days before the gathering about the location.

From architectural norms to collaborative design

How can a soft architecture mediate between the rigid and idiot-proof school building and the everyday life of its users? LU'UM assisted students of the Stadtteilschule Horn in a two-week project to appropriate various spaces within the school. In the first week, we mapped the school together and identified existing as well as missing places within the school. In a co-creative process we designed spatial interventions, which were built mostly by re-using material treasures from the school basement.

In the second week, we assisted the school children in realising their designs in a workshop. This resulted in two mobile systems for the appropriation of the school. The play corner "Rolling Toys" and the self-organized school kiosk "The Homies".

In September 2023, we were invited to the roundtalk of roundabout, a student association for the promotion of architectural discourse at the Institute of Architecture, TU Berlin. 

With a lecture performance, we invited the audience on a short, interactive journey through the various fragments of our practice. Divided into six thematic chapters, we explored together the concepts that characterize our work and critically reflected on our experiences, challenges and methods. The starting points of reference were the concepts of encounter and openness as guiding principles that have been present in the collective since its inception. We talked about the space between utopia and the negotiation of conflict, explored areas between friendship and collaboration and reported on our urban activism and the reality of power structures.

Mid of June 2023 we organized the festival "who cares" near the Schilleroper as part of the 10th Hamburger Architektur Sommer. Guests were invited to join architectural tours and performances, listen to a DJ-Set, produce screen prints on bags or t-shirts, enjoy the children's circus, exchange plants, ask questions at the panel discussion or get in contact with neighbors at the shared brunch in the shade. 
The goal of "who cares" - organized by Lea, Lucie and Berit - was to revitalize the Schilleroper, to honor the commitment of the involved preservationists and to experiment with possible future uses. The aim was to performatively activate the imagination of the participants regarding the question how an inclusive culture of heritage preservation and environmental care in a pluralistic society can look like. 

Videographer Fynn Jürgensen in collaboration with Lea Mork, will use the material of the festival as part of a short documentary about Hamburg's listed - but vacant - buildings.&#38;nbsp;

The castle of Jesteburg has never been found. Despite intensive archaeological investigations, no ruins of the former fortress have yet been located. Today, the castle can be found as a symbol of the municipality on the town's flag. What significance does the castle have as a symbol of identification in the negotiation of power structures in a rural community? Who can claim belonging to the castle? Can a castle be a place of commoning? 

In spring 2023, the collective was invited to the Jesteburg Citizens' Academy for Art in Public Spaces. During our five-day residency, we created the basis for encounters and the collaborative construction of Jesteburg Castle with a mobile platform that was rolled through the streets of the municipality. Local people were asked to contribute to the collaborative project with materials from their homes. At the final day of our residency the found materials were reinterpreted and assembled for the construction of the castle in a performative workshop.

	The vacant building of the former Karstadt-Sports store at the entrance to Mönckebergstraße has been revitalized in 2022 through cultural and creative interim use. LU'UM as part of the initiative Zentrum für Zukunft has teamed up with the foundation MUT - Urban Trust to contribute to a central place for cooperative and community-oriented inner city development for Hamburg - a space for knowledge production, experimentation and encounters. The vision was a transdisciplinary laboratory, in addition to an office community space for initiatives and activists from Hamburg (Open Office) and an autonomous event space for urban discourse (Platform), as well as&#38;nbsp; the KOL[LABOR] - as a self-managed work space for thinking, researching and experimenting.Towards the end of the first period of the interim usage, initiated by Zentrum für Zukunft, a house concept was developed by the house community of the former Karstadt-Sports building in a cooperative process. The community has been able to gain important experience with the various uses in the building. Fruitful cooperations as well as use-oriented conflicts between the different parties in the house have emerged and can be learned from. A wide range of offers from fields such as art, urban development, social issues, crafts and music events brought together different people from various social backgrounds. Beyond the assignment of the Frei_Flächen program to enable creative interim use of vacant space and forster the strengthening of Hamburg's economic competitiveness as a location for the creative industries, an awareness is thus growing for approaches for the major social challenges of the social and climate-conscious transformation of Hamburg's inner city. Related to the building's location in the center of Hamburg, there is a certain responsibility to address urgent topics around social inequality in this city. The aim of the house concept is to develop a spatial concept through which the various uses are brought into balance with each other based on the collective knowledge of its users.With more than 8000 m², the former Karstadt-Sport building accounts for about 40% of the area of the Frei_Flächen program. Therefore, it is not possible to proceed in the next period of interim usage&#38;nbsp; in the same way as with other spaces provided through the program. An additional level of a community based organization is required in the building in order to be able to react more agilely to the demands and challenges of an interim usage on this scale.

	LU'UM designs and constructs a public pavilion for encounters, that informs about the neighborhood development of the emerging WarnowQuartier and invites for gatherings and exchange. On more than 80,000 m² of building land, the future quarter will offer space for more than 2,000 inhabitants and about 1,000 workplaces.

The design derives from a self-created database of scrapped construction materials in order to extend their life cycles and act against the exploitation of natural resources. From a mind-set of care and maintenance of what exists, an impulse-giving place for the future neighborhood is aimed to be created. The neighborhood will be involved in the construction process in the framework of a building workshop. A modular design allows for a variety of uses.
Unfortunateely this project was cancelled.
